1. Introduction

1.1 Topicality
In this age our culture or environment is highly formed of an constant flow of influences from a marketing system. As from the industrial revolution untill now this culture is submitted by a florescence commercialism. A continue supply of external information which has to be processed and converted to an own identity.
Because of this overwhelming stream of information, humans are constantly triggered to make certain choices to define an own identity. As so subculturals were born. In all marketinglevels we deal with fast following trends. This is possible because of the large number of communicationsources whe are exposed to. The Western society has become a sort of slave of his own succes. We are dealing with an higly material influenced system of standards and values. Science and technology became the wheel of fortune.

Proportions between human and nature are fading out. A great part of this society forgets the importance of nature to survive. A reaction is that more and more humans get aware of the necessary for an greater conscience. More people are getting aware of the dangers which are involved when we don’t care about our environment. But there is a problem, nature is constantly reproducing herself, so that causes more and more people, we need more materials, products, food and space for this growing number of human beings.

1.1.2 Cradle to Cradle
It is possible to break the spiral of exhaustion of natural stocks, interesting is the philosophy of Braungart and McDonough, their Cradle to Cradle concept is based on the development of products which are made by full recycable raw materials. So detritus can be food in an everlasting circle. They even designed and build complete cities in China, which are producing more energy than they consume. This concept is based on downcylcing instead of upcycling. In their book Cradle to Cradle, Braungart and McDonough use an positive image of humanity, otherwise it is not possible to change this world. Their Cradle to Cradle concept is based on the creation of natural climate dat brings us ‘eternity’. Just like antz, people have to learn to that the consumed materials are traded to foodcircles, only than it is possible to erase the problems of overpopulations and exhausted stocks. Design for reincarnations, seems to be born.

1.1.3 Social environment
When we look at our social construction, we can notice that we are controlling with our left part of the brain, this is also our male half of the brain. The right part of the brain is recognized as the female part. So that is why this statement is not meant as an feministic ideal but it is a biological and scientifically proved statement, so both of the genders, are possesed with male and female parts. This is also cultural determination. In this male system, also females must be analytic polarising and rational to get a place in this monetary scheme. Female part of the brain is characterised of intuition, softness, and feelings. Also men have this character, but at this time, we do not always accept for humans to show this part of nature. I suggest that certainty is inextricable coupled to this monetary system we are living in. I also think that this need of control and be part of this society is a cause of fear. Fear is an product of our humanity but I guess that it is also coupled of this whole male reaction. Our society is divided in male and female behaviour, but I think that we need to see the importance of the coalescence of these two parts so that there are less bounderies. Male and female parts are not equal but they are equivalent. That’s why I suggest that we need both of the parts to survive.

Interesting is the research of gender. Scientists don’t know the real number of people which are born whith both genders but they think it it plausible that 4% of all humans are born as hermaphroditic also kwnown as transsexuals.
Intersexuality is not a new term, some old religions believed that Adam started his live as an hermafrodite, and later as in way of punishment, was splitted in two persons, male and female. Plato thought that there used to be three kinds of genders: male, female and hermaphrodites.
The third gender was lost in time. As from the middle ages until, in a certain way now, hermafrodites were forced to place thereselves in a certain genderrol, so they had to function as male or female. When such a person decided to switch to the other gender, they were punished by death. At 1600 in Scotland lived an hermaphrodite which was burried alive after he lived as an woman, and he was expecting an child with another woman.

Now most of this transgenders are immediatly after they are born, operated so they can be male or female. In our culture there is no place for us to be be both genders, you have to be male or female, otherwise people get confused, because it will not fit in our role patterns.
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interseksualiteit

Balance between the both parts is needed. Female thinking is not always respected, it is underestimated, and is not taken seriously. Also the male thinking is under pressure. Even today it is not accepted for a man to cry, to wear dresses, and there are more examples of less respect. The love of life is far away, woods are chopped, animals and humans are killed, peoples starve because of hunger, and we all know. These problems are for a great part the cause of our western lifestyle, we dominate the whole world. Luckely more people are aware of these problems and slowly we are seemed to wake up from this ‘American dream’. Autonomous humans are looking for soul, inner thruth, rest, spirituality, meditation, biological and ecological ways of living. In this new awareness more and more children are born which are more intuitive, they have more faith in their own feelings, and more love for live. I believe people are slowly transmitted to an new age. An age of higher consciouness, an age of positivity and more based on the senses of humanity.

2.Topic

It is all about ‘show me’ instead of’ tell me’. It is about not only telling what you do as a person but to show that you can mean something in the life of all day. People desire that you take your responsibility and take care of the wellbeing that surrounds you. So not in a function of profit and shareholders but in function of our society, Social relevance is highly needed, where can you really make a difference? Standing with both feet on the ground, become aware of your social, economical an ecological input.
http://www.fe-online.be/htm/fe_frameFee.htm

The transmission of an new age. In art movie, literature, design, theatre and music it is all about expression. In a way you can see the people who are creating as sort of messengers, because lots of trends are extracted from one of the subscriped disciplines. Also in fashion there is a group of avant gardistic designers, which are highly sensored when it is about changes and notice differntly things. Sometimes this can be a source of inspiration. These kind of designers are most of the time seen as artists, or non confirming designers. For myself I think that in fashion, you have to be aware of you awareness, mainly when you profile yourself as an designer, artist or performer, you have to get aware of the social influences you are putting in your work. This is a combination of a personal vision, which is involved with social aspects. As a designer you have to think of what messenge you want to transmit to the witnesses. Fashion has proved that it is powerfull. In changing times whe can use fashion in a way to get all people more self aware. I see a link by female thinking and a social relevance. This female thinking is more needed, and becoming a new ideal. I think it is relevant to look for more sources, than only science, More people get aware to follow to their own feelings and intuitions instead of adopt everything that is based on cultural values and standards. This non confirming group which are inspired by their own notices of what their senses are telling them. This experimental and alternative way of experience live is known in underground art-movies, music, art and fashion. I think this wellbeing mind in our society is linked with this new age.

2.1 Connection with my own work

For myself I always rely on what my senses are telling me, I think about everything, I see, smell, hear, taste, and feel. In a way I am a creator of how I experience the world I am living in. All the people I know which are involved with creation, think in in pictures instead of words. I can imagine everything I want, because I like imagination that much, it is that what you believe, if you believe in something that is such a great power, it can take you everywhere, even in another time and space. Getting notice of symbols which lay in most of art, music, theatre, is exciting. I have noticed that there is a group of avant gardistic, creators which are non confirming and creating new worlds, which are coupled at this new age whe are transmitted to. More avant gardistic designers are performing instead of showing their clothes, also video is an way to perform their collection. They want to tell a story, it is about a message.

My own work is higly influenced by art, music, people and senses. It is not only fashion which I am interested in. I am interested in collaborations between several disciplines, performances, music and art/movies. I see a lot of artists which are influenced by the future, they are introducing a new age, an age of senses instead of materials.

In the upper video I want the world to know that a evolution of our thinking is necessary to overcome the problems that we humans have. We have to open up ourself and let free our emotions for a universal evolution. Male and female open up, unite.
In the bottom video I was inspirated by love, so I thought :"Ik bij jou" or "I be with you". Because of my fascination for nature, I litteral choose to do research at bees and their behaviour. I discovered out that whole populations of bees are dying right at this moment. I saw a connection between bees and people in their behaviour and anatomics, so therefor I saw the situation of the bees as a metaphor for humans. I saw a sentence of Albert Einstein, "when the bees disappeare of the surface, humans only have for years to live". I think everything in live is connected and we should be more aware of this. I called my concept 'Persepolis', which is a healing product of the bees, which means, FOR THE SOCIETY. My strategy in this concept was to let the people know that the bees are dying and the following consequences.

3. Research

3.1 Main question
How is this new awareness or new age exposed in the work of mixed disciplines?

3.2 Subquestions
1 Can fashion be art and can art be fashion?
2 Which changes are visible in the work of artists of mixed disciplines?
3 Are there any influences from other disciplines visible in the work of avant-gardistic fashion-designers?
4. Are there any movements between the male/female role patterns?
5. Which collaberations are visible between avant-gardistic fashion designers, artists, and musicians to create a product that is representing this new awareness.
6 What is the influence of music in the world of fashion?

3.3 Reflection at the method of research
To get an answer at the questions of research I use the medium video to get a representative overview. I choose to make video analyses because it is more including because of the interactivity. Video is a more sensed product than just photo’s or words, because of the more three-dimensional opportunities. Also sounds are included all these choices contribute the image of artists.

4. Analyse

4.1 Pelican avenue

Pelican Avenue, Carolin Lerch, Antwerp

'I hope when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sight of relief, because there is somemuch to look forward to.'

This is the liner which is formulated when you look at the 'Day-one' project. A collection inspired on the apocalyps, some kind of futuristic presentation, which suggest the end of this world. The collection is completed with the video you see above. The collection is subdivided in parts, which are called, hide, keep, run, jump go, all this names are based on what a man does in dangerous situations when you have to fight for live.

'looking where nobody is looking',this is the philosophy of Carolin Lerch. This avant gardistic Fashion Designer is known for her videowork, sometimes with no connection to fashion but most of the time connected to the artist herself. After her graduation in Antwerp she studied one year Mixed Media and Videoart in Gent. Lerch collaborates with other designers, she also made an presentation for Bernhard Willhelm. In the second movie above, you can see the movie 'What was Wow.'She is representing herself in this movie, using the design of prints projected on her own face, she tells that she is one with the background, her designs, which are characterised by organic shapes.

4.2 Bernhard willhelm, Bless, Cosmic wonder

1 Bernhard Willhelm, Paris
Bernhard Willhelm, grotesque and full of fantasy, combining performance, art and fashion. At first sight his works is characterised by an childes and innocent fantasy, he is always working on his own universe, creating taboo breaking performances and he explores how he can disturb the usual codes of fashion. He unites the banal, the grotesque, the everday with the world of high fashion. His work is characterised by the collaborations of artists. In this performance he shows, his fascination for religion and performances, his latest collection is called 'Men in tights' where he is using the genderbending principle, for the presentation he did not choose for a performance but is was more like an art-movie. He cooperated with the choreographer Damien Jalet.

2. Bless, Berlin
BLESS N° 32 Frustverderber'
BLESS, performing artshow, cooperated with other artists. Fascinating is the conclusion that here it is not about the models we are formerly knowing. It is about playing together, male and female, humanity, making fun, when you are exposed to this presentation, you get triggered to come join them, you can identify with the pepole performing, there are less bounderies between models and visitors. The designers of Bless, are aware of this impact, and so they also publish the design and concept of their lookbooks inside existing magazines. Publishing the lookbooks inside other magazines allows us to spread ideas and projects by BLESS in a broader field, then only the regular press offices, or inside fashion. Joining together, new friends or making unusual encounters happen.
BLESS lookbook N° 32 Frustverderber, has been published inside the magazine Monthly Vampire, a magazine, 6th issue, Seoul, South Korea, allowing a broader distribution besides the press offices.
This lookbook adapted to the format of Monthly Vampire, a magazine, 6th issue, all lookbooks contain 'The dater.' a calendar always in context of events related to BLESS and other things.

3. Cosmic Wonder, Osaka
From the raw Osaka, Avant Gardist Yukinori Maede operates in three disciplines, Art, Fashion and Performance. Known as Japanese own holy three entity.
The fenomenon Cosmic Wonder has reached an international cult status. Cosmic Wonder is the manage of performances, installations and other non known forms of presentation. Maeda and friends seems to enchant the world. Fashion and art, a dress which seems to appear out of an wall as a line with arm breaches, a giant bra whitch is filling a whole room. Maeda is seperating himself in every detail from the fast fashion culture of his generation Japanese designers, because his works are medidative, silence connected and based on inner and deeper revelations. It is typical Japanese with an high feeling of esthetics and sublime concentration. The latest project of Cosmic Wonder is called 'Cosmic Wonder Light Source'. Enlightening!

4.3 Hussein Chalayan

Hussein Chalayan, London
Innovative fashion, Chalayan is seen as one of the most inventive and often provocating designers which concepts are political related. He also is one of the most leading artist when it is about new forms of presentation. FashionFuturism combined with technology, concept and art. He frequently choose to display video art, and performances most of the time exposed at musea and frequently at the catwalk.
His audiovisual installation 'Place to Passage', which is exposed above, is inspired by futuristic technologies which are applied in Formula 1 sport. He created a own version of a racecar which is shaped like an aƫrodynamic capsule. This capsule is created by computeranimation. This animation takes the visitor on a imaginary trip from an urban environment to dreamy landscapes. A soundscape is reinforcing the experience of this installation. This project was possible by the cooperation with 'Tribe art' which is a serial of artprojects.

Chalayans latest project is inspired by worshipping the sun and the stars.
In this video he uses a song written and composed by Antony Hegarty, an androgyn kind of artist whit a voice which is between male and female. His music, is dreamy, sensitive and avant-gardistic, he also collaborated with musicians as, Antony is joining a group of music performers, known as experimental and different, also called the freakfolkmovement, also Cocorosie and Devendra Banhart enjoying this group which frequently collaborate. Also Prada collaborated with the two sisters of Cocorosie, which songs are inspired by fairytales and his childhood.

4.4 Philips Design Probes

"Philips Design Probes is a dedicated ‘far-future’ research initiative to track trends and developments that may ultimately evolve into mainstream issues that have a significant impact on business.

The Probes generate insights from research in five main areas; politics, economic, culture, environments and technology futures.

With the aim of understanding ‘lifestyle’ post 2020, the program aims to identify probable systemic shifts in the social and economic domains likely to affect our business and create intellectual property in new areas. It challenges conventional ways of thinking to come up with concepts to stimulate debate. Deliverables range from scenarios and narratives to the creation of experience prototypes and IP fortressing."

"One of this year’s Probe project areas is SKIN, which examines the future integration of sensitive materials in the area of emotional sensing – the shift from ‘ intelligent’ to ‘sensitive’ products and technologies.
As part of SKIN, we have developed two ‘Soft Technology’ outfits to identify the future for high tech materials and Electronic Textile Development in the area’s of skin and emotional sensing.
The dresses show emotive technology and how the body and the near environment can use pattern and color change to interact and predict the emotional state."

4.5 Prada, Cocorosie, Eternal children

1 Prada as one of the worlds most known fashionlabels, is showing the world, a new kind of feeling. Prada has made this animation, which is higly influenced by the work of the two avant-gardistic sisters, called Cocorosie, these performers make music in a particular way, most of the time they are using toys and in the end, it is becoming a strange composition of experimental sounds, in a positive childess way. Prada collaborated with Cocorosie which resulted in a animation movie which is supported with a Cocorosie song.

This movie about, nature, religion and myths is a way of communication, to show the viewer the Prada philosophy and feeling, instead of just showing fashion. It is about storytelling, experience and a positive and feelings of light and pleasures.

2. Cocorosie
Explosive colours, positivity about faith, live and Love, the message of this clip is Love. These dreamy sisters, are the most relevant example of the influence of music in a label like Prada. The work of Cocorosie is higly based of music which is made by feeling, senses and art. Combining their childhood, fairies, and spirituality into an overwhelming experience. Cocorosie was formerly known by an small group and was operating in a underground, alternative scene. Earlier they were seen as crazy and weird musicians but after a few years they were getting more accepted by the mainstream. Prada was aware of the oppurtunities which cocorosie brought with them, so a collaboration was born.

3. Documentary about the eternal children
When people grow up, we loose our childhood, we see it as a time in our live. Cocorosie shows us their inner child. They even still believe in fairies. Wonderfull! Maybe the world needs fairies and stories to get more aware. In all fairies, messages are hiding.

4.6 Lucky dragons

MAKE A BABY"
(interactive performance, 2005-present)

"Here we use homemade hardware and software to initiate, monitor, and meaningfully interpret the transfer of data through skin contact between multiple people.

Participants pick up a carrier signal--line level audio at set frequencies in a series of digital feedback loops--through contact with conductive fabric sensors. By touching other participants on the skin the signal is transferred at varying impedance levels--a direct result of minute variations in the quality of touch from gently brushing to fully grasping. When the varying impedance is measured, a map of the physical interaction is created by the software and used as control data for visualization and sonification of the group interaction. Combinatorial geometric patterns and interlocking tone series allow for each gesture to retain transparency--each individual's slightest touch registers a shift in the sound and the image created, and yet, through the intricacies of multiple points of combination and modulation, the overall sensation of the piece is of group identity. In addition to this crucial transparency, the guiding criteria of the project are scalability (easily used by both very large and very small groups), self-sustained operation (no need for centralized control), and intuition (easy to learn, and to teach).

Each instantiation of a “Make a Baby” performance is unique, depending entirely on the "shape of the group" of audience members participating. At the heart of our interest is the simultaneously intimate and mediated nature of group relationships. the performances themselves bring to light the dynamic shapes and behaviors that may exist beneath the surface of any group, whereas the collaboratively created sound and image serve as insightful illustrations for these “social sculptures”. The possibilities for technological innovation at the stage of mediation and translation--how data about the group interaction is collected and converted into visual and audible expression--approach the problem of using touch as a controlling and mediating action, in other words, extending the possibility of complexly communicating with one another through touch. Ideally the technological and aesthetic designs of the project will continue to develop with parallel goals--to serve as an illustrated model of group interaction on a very intimate level, and as a tool for collaborative creation. The aesthetic evolution of this project has yielded a wealth of audio-visual patterns and textures created as a by-product of physical interaction within a group structure. It is so interesting to witness the forms that arise out of a simple consideration for practical technological criteria--what works as a tool also works as a thing of beauty."

4.7 Alexander Mcqueen and Diesel

1. Alexander Mcqueen
Alexander Mcqueen is the first designer which used a holographic presentation. In this presentation icon Kate Moss appeared in a hoographic presentation like some kind of ghost. This way of presenting shows the viewer a new way of fashion, it is about the experience. He mixed technology with design to get a dreamy and phantom effect. It is not about the product but he wants to let people feel.

2. Diesel
Spring/Summer 08 catwalk show, While regular human models paced up and down the runway, a host of polyp-like CGI characters appeared in mid-air to interact with them within an underwater landscape. And in a unique twist, these animated holograms were entirely viewable from both sides of the stage. But this was no Paul Daniels Magic Show trickery – more a perfect blend of cutting edge digital art and performance.

Diesel’s Creative Team (under the direction of Wilbert Das) based the show on an aquatic theme entitled “Liquid Space” and brought together Barcelona animation studio Dvein – who worked on the CGI visual effects and 3D animations – and Danish multi-media production agency, Vizoo, who provided the innovative technology for the show, which they had created themselves. Neither studio, say Diesel, had previously worked on anything like this before.

Fascinated by their use of animated holograms in the fashion show environment, we asked Diesel to explain how some of the technology worked. Mysteriously, the nice guy we spoke to wouldn’t give his name, nor could he shed too much light on the unique process they used. Keeping the magic alive you see. But here’s what could tell us about how they did it…

“The visuals are projected through a series of ‘foils’ into mid air, so you see the images in mid-air. The models can then interact with them and walk through them. We used plastic foils placed at 45 degree angles so that the projected light from the ceiling goes onto a foil, is reflected on to another and then into the air.

We worked it so it had a real catwalk feel and so that you could view it from both sides: you can see the models, the holograms and the public from both sides. It’s never been used this way before as the technology has just been used in the corporate world before, for sales presentations, and the visuals have always just been viewed from one side. So we set up two rigs instead.

The animations were done with standard CGI animation software but were made for a 15m by 2.5m screen. It’s all rendered in HD, too, so was quite demanding as it’s 30 frames per second. We worked on the whole thing, from storyboard through to the final render in just two and a half months. Bringing together Dvein and Vizoo gave us this unique, truly holographic, 3D motion graphic experience.”

4.8 Yacht - women of the world

In this videoclip the singer of the one man band, yacht, wants to let the world know, it is necessary that the women have to take over politics, otherwise the world will come to an end. IT WON'T TAKE LONG

5. Conclusions

I can see that more and more people are getting aware of the situation of the world.
The sisters cocorosie show us that we should listen more to the inner child which we were formerly, this child that we still are and still exists in us. This child recognises the magical moments of live.

The new awareness or new age is exposed in the work of mixed disciplines by making performances. Or how Chalayan shows us technology mixed with music and collaborations. The choice of music is an assesment which is one of the basics when it is about branding. We see a great infuence of the freakfolkmovement which I see as 'New Age' performers because of the lyrics, art-works and the specific feeling you get by hearing it. Their messages are about is hope, faith and love and honour live. Prada saw the magic that Cocorosie brings and launched them into the world of fashion, and it is also a significant choice for Prada's brandingstrategy.

Fashion can be art and art can be fashion. Art only can be created when it is made by senses and feeling. When a fashon designer develops his pieces with the concept on his mind instead of the product, his work is all about a concept which is presented. So the fashiondesigner is a autonomous artist and therefor fashion can be art. The work can be called non conforming.
The branding of Cosmic Wonder seems to enchant the world.

There are changes visible in the work of artists of mixed disciplines. More designers choose for mixed media because of the comprehensive effects. It is not only about a product, it is about showing the world your vision.

Avant gardistic fashiondesigners are influenced by art, movies, musicians, so therefor we see a more performing way of fashion instead of just showing a collection. It is a choice of positioning. Like Bernhard Willhelm and Hussein Chalayan showd us. Like Bernhard Willhelm unites the banal, the grotesque, the everyday with the world of high fashion. His work is characterised by the collaborations of artists. In this performance he shows, his fascination for religion and performances,

Also Bernhard Willhelm showd in his latest collection the movement between male/female role patterns. Like his collection 'Men in tights' where he is using the genderbending principle. He did not choose for a performance but is was more like an art-movie.

Bernhard Willhelm choose to collaborate with choreographer Damien Jalet. Chalayan collaborated with Anthony Haggart, also part of the New Age musicians like Cocorosie.
I conclude that collaborations are becoming more popular. We get aware that when you put your strenghts together you can give the world a more complete vision.
